. he was forced in toe the cabin and not able to get out. san bernardino sheriffs office is certain they have the entire area cordoned off, sealed enough that they know he did not get out of it. they had helicopters overhead. they know they were able to keep that person in that cabin and that everything that they know about christopher dorner's last movements or every sighting of him up until that cabin brought him all the way in to that cabin. so it is very likely -- the other thing that i learned earlier, that i didn't think of much when i first learned it, is his cell phone popped on earlier today and it is possible that law enforcement was able to talk to him and at least by voice confirm that it was him, either on the run or in that cabin and try to ascertain whether he had hostages in there. that was clearly one of the big points where everything sort of mellowed at one point during the day. everything stopped when they weren't sure whether they could go in to that cabin and take him out. because they weren't sure if there were hostages. at one point they realized there were n
in this cabin in the san bernardino mountains following a shootout with authorities that wounded two officers. he's been on the run for six days. joining me now is fbi profiler clint van zandt. clint, what can you tell us? >> well, we know that dorner allegedly hid in these mountains. al, he was able to break into a cabin. he may have held one or two people hostage for an extended period of time. he left that cabin, stole their vehicle, and fled the area supposedly one of the hostages may have been able to dial 911. the authorities saw the vehicle, made some type of stop of the vehicle. a shootout took place with authorities. two officers are shot and down. dorner was able to make his way back to a cabin where he's been barricaded and there are reports of literally hundreds of rounds fired exchanged between dorner and the law enforcement officers that currently surround the cabin. >> clint, we're awaiting a live press conference by the los angeles police department, but let me -- let me kind of recap what you're telling us. we're told that he allegedly did a home invasion on a cabin -- in a c

have been involved in a robbery in the big bear area, san bernardino sheriffs are currently responding and are in touch with the robbery at big bear. what do you see, what are you learning? >> well, wolf, we're actually on the road just west of big bear. with the sirens on, we immediately -- to be quite frank with you, we don't know exactly where they are at this moment, for the last several days, we know that there has been a heavy law enforcement presence here, they have been going on searches, they have been doing air searches, ground searches, today we're told that the air searches have stopped and it's been pretty much ground searches. other than that right now, what you've been reporting, we're working on more details. and as we get them, we'll bring them to you. >> this vehicle that has been destroyed, that has been found where you are in the big bear area, chris, isn't that right? >> yes, just a few miles from where i'm standing right now. the reports that have been out there indicate that at least if they turn out to be accurate, these reports say that what's happening now is

we have is he broke into a house in the san bernardino mountains, tied up two of the people who lived there, stole their pickup truck and is now trying to get away from police. >> yeah. it may be that's exactly the case. realize, chris, that's one of the scenarios that law enforcement had to the consider. as you know, up in those mountains where they've conducted this massive manhunt, there are literally hundreds of private homes and cottages, some that are occupied and some that aren't. police believe they had done a house-by-house search, but somehow in one of those residences it appear that is dorner had managed to break in, held two people hostage for over an extended period of time, and now perhaps with one hostage attempted to make a break to escape from that area. there are media reports that suggest a vehicle he's driving, a pickup truck, has been wrecked or otherwise run off the road, that dorner has abandoned the vehicle, that he is still armed with a semiautomatic weapon, and there are media reports that a running gun battle is taking place with him and the authorities and
